Rapid Payments
Rapid Payment is one of the interim payment offers for redress offered by current government agencies (see details for each agency for more information).
These payments differ on where you were placed, and for how long. They are not done on the abuse you have suffered.
The payments can range from $1,000-$30,000 depending on the government provider or agency.
These payments work far quicker, and depending on the agency, can be paid out in less than six months, while the full claims process can take several years.
Note: Those who are of very ill health and are terminally ill can ask to have their claim prioritised under either RAPID payment or the full claims process.

The Ministry of Health handles historic abuse claims relating to state-run psychiatric and psychopaedic institutions, for incidents occurring before 1 July 1993 (including physical abuse, sexual abuse, or punitive treatments such as ECT or solitary confinement).
Since 1993, complaints about the quality or rights of health and disability services are overseen by the Health and Disability Commissioner under the Health and Disability Commissioner Act 1994.
For more information, or to lodge a claim visit their website or alternatively you can contact the Historic Abuse Resolution Service at the Ministry of Health.

In 2002 the District Health Boards (DHBs) were disestablished and absorbed into the new Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) - a new national health system. To make a historic claim, you must request your personal records from the district health board where your hospital is, or where it was based before being closed. Contact details for District Health Boards can be found here, or the Ministry of Health or Te Whatu Ora can give you advice about this.
Ministry of Education
You may be able to lodge a sensitive claim with the Ministry of Education if you believe you experienced abuse (physical, sexual, psychological), mistreatment, or neglect while attending:
-
a specialist or residential school before 1989
-
a state primary school before 1989
-
any state school that has since closed, including specialist or health-camp schools
These situations fall under the Ministry’s “Sensitive Claims – Abuse in State Schools” process.

Important note:
If the incident occurred at a primary school after 1989, or at a secondary school that is still operating, the school’s Board of Trustees may be the correct organisation to respond to your claim.
If the incident occurred at a private school, you will need to contact the school’s governing body first.
